LAYTON — A woman is dead and her 3-year-old son was airlifted with critical injuries after a police chase on I-15 resulted in a crash early Sunday.
At about 7:30 a.m., a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted a Dodge Caravan police had been looking for and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the woman driving the van would not stop, according to UHP Capt. Chris Simmons. The van attempted to exit I-15 at Antelope Drive in Layton but rolled due to the high rate of speed, he said.
The woman and her 3-year-old son were both thrown from the vehicle, Simmons said. The woman died at the scene and the boy sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Investigators say they are not sure if the woman was wearing a seat belt, but they do know the child was not properly restrained in a car seat.
The identities of the mother and son were not released Sunday afternoon.
