CORNISH, Cache County — One person was killed when a vehicle and train collided Wednesday afternoon.
About 1 p.m., a Union Pacific train heading north collided with a vehicle in Cornish, Cache County, Union Pacific spokeswoman Meg Siffring said.
A 40-year-old man sustained fatal injuries when his vehicle was hit by a train while crossing an “unregulated train crossing,” a statement from Cache County Sheriff’s Office says. The crossing does not have any lights or cross arms, but it does have a stop sign.
“It did push the vehicle about half a mile down the tracks before they were able to stop, and that was when they found the driver was deceased inside the van,” Lt. Doyle Peck said.
The man’s identity was not released Wednesday night, but the sheriff confirmed he is a Cache County resident.
No one on the train was injured.
The sheriff’s office statement says two other westbound vehicles successfully crossed in front of the train and got through the intersection located at 14300 North, just east of 4800 West. The vehicle that was hit was the third one to cross.
Officials say this is a tragic reminder for all drivers to ensure nothing is coming down the tracks when they are at a railroad crossing.
